City peoples..

No rain in the city yesterday but brrrr it was chilly willy! Checking the temperature to see what it actually was when I took these shots the forecast read 14C but feels like 11C, it was the wind that did it. There were coats and scarves and even some shorts and tee shirts, go figure, but for me the prize goes to the happy traveler, the lady in animal print everything to the right of the pic, you might have to embiggen the pic to see her in all her glory, isn't she fabulous struttin' along there πŸ˜‰ Happy Friday, take care and stay safe..

'Where it is familiar becomes new'..

When the sun goes down and the lights come on something familiar during the day can take on a completely different appearance. Such is the case with the Elizabeth Quay Ferry Jetty, seen a few nights ago above and many times during the day below. Through the day spots reflected onto the sections from the top cover give the appearance of a pattern of holes whereas at night the fluro lighting highlights the solid sections in the glow from the water.. pretty cool huh πŸ˜‰ Happy Thursday, take care and stay safe..

Searching for treasure..

There was a long list of instructions for the children heading onto Fremantle's Bathers Beach, I wonder if like me the only one they heard was 'each of  you find four treasures things to bring back.' School excursions for children these days are such fun. When I was this age I lived in Central Africa and family holidays were often to Beira in Mozambique to swim in the Indian Ocean thousands of kilometres away :) I love that my children grew up swimming in the very same ocean but only five minutes from home, funny how that happened :) Happy Wednesday, take care and stay safe..

Deconstructed art..

It's hard to tell whether the art or the building came first here. 'Convicts Created Fremantle' by Art by Row, see more of his work here, is the artist's 'rendition of a convict with his arm made of wood reflecting the original jetty of Fremantle harbour which was created by early convicts. Holding the lighthouse that sits at the mouth of the Swan River that plays a traditional role directing boats into our harbour spawning the original constructs of Fremantle society.' Fremantle has so much fantastic art depicting the history of the port, it's always a pleasure to come across a piece not seen before. Happy Tuesday, take care and stay safe.. P.s. big catch up today πŸ’›

City to Surf 2018.. The tortoise and the hare!

Arriving in the city at 8am yesterday morning for this years City to Surf run/walk, the first time for three years. With the help of knee guards, pain killers and dogged determination :) we walked the 12k in a more than respectable time! The tortoise and the hare analogy couldn't have been more appropriate, keeping a steady pace soon had us passing the speedy hare's that were running out of puff πŸ˜‰ Above and below heading up to the start line on St Georges Terrace..

Along the way..

The gorgeous dog below was there at the half way mark, spread out at the side of the road blatantly waiting for tummy rubs, of which he got many, from passing walkers.. he was adorable and it was very kind of his owner to share it's doggy restorative powers πŸ’›

The prettiest section of the walk through Perry Lakes Reserve
onto Oceanic Drive and..

... the last leg of the walk before arriving at City Beach. I haven't been so happy to see the Indian Ocean since the last time I did this walk :) For every down you walk there is a hill to climb, that's what makes this a challenge, I don't mind saying I was pretty chuffed with myself :) Happy Monday, take care and stay safe...

Yagan Square.. Digital Canopy.

A trip to the city on Friday evening for the Perth Makers Market at Yagan Square was the perfect opportunity to take a few shots from Aimee's office of the digital canopy over the square lit up. Inspired 'by the lake system that ran through the CBD until the 1800s it is one of the key design features. Providing shelter from the elements through the day and in the evening a spectacular lighting display depicting the area's history'. Looks pretty fab from up there oui. Wish me luck, I'm doing the 12k City to Surf walk today, the first time since I fractured my knee two years ago 😨 Happy Sunday, take care and stay safe. P.s. I couldn't decide which shot to use so here they both are. P.p.s. the Horseshoe Bridge is still the star for me :)

Swags and Swans..

It was good to see the Fremantle Town Hall looking like it's original self again after extensive restorations last year. When the town hall was opened back in 1887 Freo was a small backwater town population roughly 4000, so you can imagine what they thought of this rather grand affair but with the gold rushes in the later part of the 19th century the population had increased to 25,000 by 1900 thus making the grand town hall much more appropriate! Can you believe in the 1960's at great cost they painted the town hall white.. quelle horreur, what were they thinking! It took a team of specialized workers with traditional skills, read about it and see it in it's 'white period' here, to restore it to it's original state. Must have been a b--ger to get the paint off πŸ˜‰ Bon weekend, take care and stay safe.. P.s. blue skies are here again...

Contemplating shadows..

Early morning light is the best πŸ’› In Fremantle yesterday for breakfast at Chalkys below, just as the port city was waking up. Looking down High Street, check out the gorgeous street-scape here, while waiting for that first all important coffee. Blue skies once more but as you can see from the coats, still chilly. Can't believe it's Friday already, well for me anyway :) Happy day, take care and stay safe..

Then and now.. heart or head!

Perth City Baths c1898, another view here.. too fabulous! Could this area possibly be any more different from it's incarnation into today's Elizabeth Quay. The romantic part of my brain wishes I could have experienced the 1900's Moorish architecture and the liberating wickedness of wearing a bathing suit such as this πŸ˜‰, but the reality of having to trek for miles on a hot Perth summer day to get there, plus the fact that the baths were available to men only for the hottest part of the day would have seriously ruffled my equilibrium :) As lovely as it looks, at that time the population in Perth was roughly 45,000.. it would never have coped with the 2million plus living here today. Still.. it does look a treat don't you think. Happy Thursday, take care and stay safe..

Return of Winter..

The blue skies of the past few days were engulfed in magnificently ominous rain clouds yesterday, the change was dramatic to say the least.. as if to remind us that we are still officially in winter, even if just for a another week. Unable to hold the weight any longer the clouds burst and rain came down in torrents. The patch of light centre pic above valiantly shining through a hole in the cloud..

This was the point where I had to run and duck for cover.. it was super exhilarating in a frantic kind of way :) I do πŸ’™ the rain. Happy Wednesday, take care and stay safe..

Tribute to Mrs S..

Like most of us I enjoy beautifully executed street art.. if it has a story attached even better! Always delighted to come across a new piece by Perth based mural and installation artist Daek William. When in Maylands last week having lunch with mon amie franΓ§aise Marie it was the first thing I spotted coming along Whatley Crescent on the wall of Mrs S Cafe. Commissioned by the City of Bayswater it is the last in a series of sixteen murals in Maylands curated by Studio 281. As Mrs S Cafe is located in a heritage listed building it was a bit trickier, until delving into the history of the area it was discovered that back in the 1920's Mrs.S Harpon did in fact have tea-rooms along the crescent thus creating a connection between past and present Maylands, problem solved beautifully! You can read the story here, interesting it is! Happy Tuesday, take care and stay safe..

1930's Icon..

You would have seen the 1930's pylon on Cottesloe Beach hundreds of times during Sculpture by the Sea below, or even while having tea here, somehow it appears framed by the artworks in so many of my shots. The pylon, part of the beach’s pre WWII shark net, is the only structure left, the others destroyed by bad weather over the years. The pylon here has also suffered damage, repairs carried out out earlier this year have sparked debate whether to spend more or to ask the public if they want the pylon a) replaced with a commissioned sculpture, b) kept and improved in its current form or c) the offshore site used for a diving platform. My vote without doubt would go to b.. I can't imagine this scene without this 1930's icon. What do you think, worth saving or not? Happy new week, take care and stay safe..

Sweet Sunday Shot..

Another beautiful winters day in Perth yesterday.. walking along the boardwalk at Hillarys Boat Harbour I couldn't resist a spontaneous shot of the two little sweethearts having so much fun on family friendly Stillwater beach. It was one of those quick clicks that may or may not amount to much but I love the shadows, the pink, the reflections in the sand and most of all the innocence of the moment captured.. hope you enjoy it also. Happy Sunday, take care and stay safe.. P.s. It was the only shot I took yesterday 😊

Shady reflections..

Reflections of the Matagarup Bridge in Aimee's mirrored sunglasses.. my camera was almost touching her glasses.. we got some inquiring looks :) When we were on the bridge we did wonder if the bridge, maximum height 72m, would be suitable for climbing and on reading the above link, it would seem that, with handrails and elevated platform already incorporated in the design, that is the plan, with perhaps even a zip line from top to ground.. I'll take photos from ground level πŸ˜‰ Happy weekend, take care and stay safe..

Look and stare.. I don't care!

'A bulldog is not for everyone, you'll know that from the start,
but when that bulldog looked at me,
I quickly lost my heart'.. πŸ’™

Couldn't resist a quick shot of this lovely chubby bulldog spreadeagled on the street in Leederville yesterday. He glanced at me with a 'look and stare.. I don't care' attitude.. we all get days like that right :) Happy Thursday, take care and stay safe..

The Matagarup Bridge..

Or as I like to call it the 'roller-coaster bridge'. The newly opened Matagarup Bridge, or as Aimee likes to call it the 'Leggo/Meccano' bridge :) Check out the two minute video showing how it was put together here. This and the relatively new Elizabeth Quay Bridge add two dramatic new features to the Perth city-scape. Above and below heading over the bridge from East Perth to the Optus Stadium which opened earlier this year..

Below heading back to the city, seen to the right..

Below you can see why the new bridge reminds me of a rollercoaster oui! This is where the Activated Art Walk that I posted about yesterday concluded. Still a little bit of landscaping around and under the bridge to be completed but already looking quite spectacular. Who remembers when I used to have a conniption fit whenever anything changed in Perth.. got to move with the times or get left behind right πŸ˜‰ Happy Wednesday, take care and stay safe..

Augmented Reality..

If like me you weren't exactly sure what AR is, explanation here. They lost me at 'the objects that reside in the real-world are 'augmented' by computer-generated perceptual information, sometimes across multiple sensory modalities'πŸ˜‰ Even so, the novelty factor and the enjoyment of the 6km Activated Walk with my beautiful daughter on a sunny winters day made it an all round enjoyable experience. If you look at Aimee's Instagram, all up less than a minute, here, here, here, here, here and here you will see augmented reality.. in reality :) Definitely worth a watch. Happy Tuesday, take care and stay safe.. P.s. don't forget to hit 'play' on each one..

Beautiful..

Aimee and I were in the city on Saturday to take an 'arty' walk, art that involved mobile apps and 'augmented reality', tell you all about that tomorrow.  Along the way I was delighted to come across this huge, third shot to show perspective, new mural by renowned Melbourne artist Rone, see more of his fabulous work here. On the wall of the newly opened Westin Hotel on the eastern end of Hay Street. It was good to stand and appreciate it without having to use my phone :) Below reflected in a window on the other side of the street. Happy Monday, take care and stay safe..

Here comes the sun...

It's true! Behind the clouds the sun is still shining. Who would have thought the night before I took these shots, when thunder was actually rattling my windows, that Friday would be so perfect.. chilly, but perfect! A window table at the Indiana always provides wonderfully framed vistas out to sea and along Cottesloe Beach. Coffee, cake and beach views.. makes me happy! Looks like the sun is back.. at least for a few days. Hope you are having a fab weekend, happy Sunday, take care and stay safe..

Twenty two Winnie the Pooh!

Interesting to see that after all the rain we have had over winter Mundaring Weir, as at yesterday, is holding 30.38GL of water, 47.8% of its capacity, compared to last year at this time when it held 20.28GL, 31.9% of its capacity, so up by 10.1GL. Even more fascinating that the last time the water flowed over the dam below was 22 years ago in 1996.. even more fascinating :) the last time before that was in 1974, exactly 22 years previously.. can you see where I'm going with this? We are now 2018, exactly 22 years apart.. is it possible with all this rain that I might be showing you shots like these before the end of winter.. that really would be fascinating! Happy Saturday, take care and stay safe.. P.s. I don't play bingo but couldn't resist the play on words in title πŸ˜‰
