A difficult decision!



After taking these shots shots in Fremantle Harbour we zipped over to Freo's town square to take some pics, maybe for the last time, of the two magnificent Moreton Bay Fig trees that have been sitting in Kings Square for over a hundred and twenty years, branches spread out over St. John's Church. They are not well! Palliative care or the chain saw seems to be the difficult decision for the  Fremantle council, but so concerned about local backlash, the tree below the iconic Freo Christmas tree for many years, the council is appealing for public opinion. If you are interested to see exactly how much effort the council has put in over the past few years, and are prepared to continue if the public so demands, have a read here, really interesting.. will be keeping an eye on this one.     If possible the tree should b saved It has been there for four or five generations, and might last several more with care.

    It's a wonderful tree. But I ever had a sad story with an old (not so old)dfig tree... https://kwarkito.blogspot.com/2011/07/le-figuier.html. If the tree is sick, it may provoke terrible damage if it falls

    Such beautiful trees and a very difficult decision. I'll never forget the first time I saw, and sat under, the Morton Bay Fig in Santa Barbara. A gigantic tree with huge roots, it was so impressive.

    Personally I hate to see any tree taken down or not correctly trimmed. Then sometimes Mother Nature solves the problem.

    I hate to see a tree come down but falling branches can be a serious hazard. We had to take down a large failing plum tree this year. It lost a big branch last year and we could see where another would go in a strong wind and split the whole trunk. In addition to planting mature trees as replacements the city could commit to a citywide street tree planting effort and get residents involved. Win-win.

    Awful to lose trees, but by the photo in the link, they are very unwell trees and I think past saving.

    Oh, that´s so sad, Grace. But it´s a good thing people can help in the decision and that, if they decide to let the tree go, there will be a mature tree that can take over the Christmas-tradition.
    Your Mayor is sane (unlike ours).

    I don't give a fig, said a Scrooge from the U.S. Seriously, it sounds like a sad situation but right now I'm trying to deal with a president who is an ignorant fool and commits treason on a regular basis and worst of all is supported by too many of our citizens.

    Well at least they care, one council here had to be told by the government to stop cutting down the trees in the town, they did not care about public opinion, bit late for the tees that went though

    It always breaks my heart to see a tree coming down. In our surroundings so many trees have disappeared for make highways....so sad :(
