Hostel versus hotel?

Backpackers versus hotel.. which do you prefer? Like all big cities Perth has a goodly number of backpacker hostels.. some better than others, I'd advise much research before choosing. The Old Swan Barracks Backpackers Hostel in Northbridge is in the heritage listed 1896 barracks, renovated in 2008 and described now as 'totally geared towards the ongoing comfort of our international visitors'. The reviews vary from 'the BEST hostel ever' to 'it's a hellhole' (that made me smile) and everything in between. If I was 18 and exploring the world I might take a chance but these days it's all about comfort, I'll stick with hotels :) Happy Thursday, take care..

  3. Wow this is a fancy hostel, a castle! In Canada I slept in a hostel with hubby a few years ago. I felt like 16 again...

  4. I have to do everything for myself at home. When I travel, I want room service!

  5. Lovely, I'd have a room, if only they could it. Maybe me and my son, ha ha.

  6. The building is marvellous but I am now too old not to want a hotel room!

  7. interesting...i've heard of hostels but never really understood what one was...it sounds like a cool thing to do if i was younger and travelling without kids. beautiful building!

  8. I'm totally with you on this one. If I was between 18 and 25 I'd probably check this out and enjoy myself completely. But, now I want to be comfortable. Affordable is still necessary but, cleanliness and comfort are very high on my list.
This is a great looking building though!

  10. Lovely building wasted on kids!
You are right about comfort mind, and I'd love the 18 year old energy.

  12. I think I could still do camping out...rough camping out of the back of a truck...like Don and I used to do (we were both super organized so it worked out really well). Otherwise bring on the hotel :)

  14. Yep, when I travel, I generally stick with hotels. I like to be surprised in ways other than by the bed/mattress/board I'm sleeping on. ;-)

  15. I'm with you. My idea of camping is a Marriott Courtyard with pool, restaurant, and big, comfy beds! I'd be much less likely to be hostile when I woke up in a Marriott than if I woke up in a hostel. :)

  16. I like the style of the building, anyway.

We have ourselves a hostel too here, one that used to be a jail in the 19th century. I've been in a part of the building that's a museum. It feels like you're being watched.

  17. Give me my pack and a sleeping bag and I can find a place to sleep nearly anywhere. However, being married Mrs. M. will not let me (if she is with me) any place but a nice hotel/
    Beautiful building.

  23. As I was 18, I slept in many kinds of places . Now , age is there , I prefer comfort than adventure ..But , ohhh, being 18 again, for a few days , but with my experience in mind .... :o)

  24. Hmmm! I went to dictionary.com and it defined "Hostel" as an inexpensive, supervised lodging place for young people on bicycle trips, hikes, etc. I guess that counts me out Grace. Chuckle.

  28. I agree as well, Grace! We used to have a cabin without toilet/shower but last time we were accidentally upgraded for free, with own toilet/shower - and will try to get that cabin again in Feb!
1995 we stayed in such a hostel one night with two other guys - awful!
I´m old now, I need a certain kind of luxury, never again (hopefully) will I be forced to take a cold shower (which was not such a huge problem in 95/99)...

  29. Oh, if only I didn't associate the word backpacker with cockroaches [of both the insect and human kind]. You definitely need to spend a night there and send us more "inside" information...

  30. i am MUCH too old for hostels, but i think that they serve a very useful purpose, and I'm glad that they are there for young people and families who can use them.
