Planned burning..

On our way home yesterday I took a few shots to show the city and surrounding areas engulfed in smoke. From April to October each year on days when the weather is appropriate the WA Government organizes Planned Burning in bushfire prone areas. Planned burning describes 'deliberately burning a predetermined area under appropriate environmental conditions to reduce fuel loads (the vegetation and dead plant material that can burn in a fire). Planned burns are undertaken under mild and stable weather conditions so that the fire burns slowly and is controllable with low flame heights'..

Asthma sufferers and people with other breathing difficulties are forewarned and I imagine at these times it isn't pleasant for them and they have to take extra care, but for the devastation major summer bush fires can cause the planned burn offs are essential in a State where the summer temperatures can reach the mid 40C and higher. Below exiting the Graham Farmer tunnel into the mist :) Are planned burn offs something that happens in your part of the world? Happy Friday, take care and stay safe..

Back in time..

Like most people I find old black and white photos captivating. From architecture to dress style and everything in between! You have seen the heritage listed Horseshoe Bridge built in 1904 here before, when it was built it was the main pass over from the city to Northbridge, with the new development of Yagan Square this is no longer the case. The last time I was in the city the old photo here was inserted into one of the under arches. Despite searching I couldn't find when it might have been taken but.. if you pull it in you will see soldiers either going off to or returning from I'm guessing the First World War between 1914-1918 definitely not the Second World War, the clothes are all wrong. Is it just me who finds these old images fascinating? I'm not sure if the link will work but have a look HERE to see horse drawn carriages going across the bridge instead of cars, looove it! Happy Thursday, take care and stay safe..

Full of gentle mischief..

What a treat! Calling in to drop something off at the State Library of WA yesterday I was delighted to see that there is an exhibition of May Gibbs wonderful illustrations. Inspired by walking in the bush south of Perth when she was a child and later from bush walks in the Blue Mountains the enchanting illustrations of her renowned Gumnut Babies are too adorable not to embiggen and enjoy full size. I remember reading Snugglepot and Cuddlepie to my children, did anyone else? One of Australia's foremost children's authors and illustrators you can read a short story of her life here. Happy Wednesday, take care and stay safe..

Fremantle faerie..

It's not often you get the chance to snap a fairy aglow in the spring sunlight 🌸 I'm going to make a guess and say this sweet sprite checking her phone messages is taking a break from faerie fun in the Pickled Fairy. You might remember our last visit there where we found the gorgeous May Gibbs fairy costume for my three year old great niece who lives in Canada. A shop full of magical mysteries. Happy Tuesday, take care and stay safe..

Fremantle roosters..

Spotted le grand chook when we were in Fremantle last week. 'Fremantle Roosters' was commissioned by Silverleaf Investments and painted in July by Dutch born Fremantle based multi-disciplinary artist Amok Island. You can see St. John's Anglican Church in the background below, the inspiration for the mural came from 'some old historic photos taken from the church where you could see a lot of backyards full of chicken coops, so they thought it was fitting to do to a bit of a historic reference,' the artist said. Amok Island's stylized geometric murals can be seen all around the world, we are lucky to have him call WA home. Happy new week, let's hope it's a good one, take care and stay safe..

Living in a bubble..

OK last bubble shot for a while :) I thought this one was pretty cool the way the wide angle view from Kings Park takes in so much more of the city skyline and Elizabeth Quay. We are living in a kind of bubble here in WA with closed borders to the rest of the world including other states in Australia, our Premier is doing a brilliant job of keeping us safe.. but how long before the bubble bursts! Happy weekend, take care and stay safe.. P.s. took this shot super fast due to the heat factor mentioned in previous post :)

Ahoy matey!

A few things I spotted along the coast road yesterday. Firstly I have to say driving home along the coast road has to be one of life's simple pleasures, the sun, the sea, the sand and if you are lucky a tall mast sailing ship on the horizon. The STS Leeuwin II (Sail Training Ship) operated by non profit organization Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation offers training voyages along the WA coast. Unfortunately this was as close as I could get, would have loved to see it close up just out from Fremantle harbour.. one day..

Despite the sign below.. Share, Enjoy, Respect plus shark fin :) there are always surfers out there waiting for that perfect wave to ride..

The view looking down the coast to Fremantle Harbour above and below the Cottesloe Sundial, I did a quick time check and either my watch was out by five minutes or the sun was running late :) Happy Friday, take care and stay safe..
