It's hard to imagine this beautiful stretch of coast three minutes from home as anything but pristine white sand and clear blue ocean stretching out to the horizon, but it has a past. This is also the migratory path of the southern right whale and the humpback whales. Each year between May and December the whales slowly make their way along the WA coast thus making them an easy target for whalers back in 1849 when a whaling station was right here (interesting read). Abandoned after only three years thank goodness. In 1979 Australia adopted an anti-whaling policy permanently ending
whaling in Australian waters, instead
focusing heavily on working towards the international protection and
conservation of whales.. better late than never! Odyssey by Australian artist/sculptor Albie Herbert. Happy Tuesday, take care and stay safe..
A policy worth following. Great setting.
ReplyDeleteGrace, that is a fine monument to the whales who pass by this shore. So glad Australia now protects them.
ReplyDeletegreat picture, both! the sky is impressive,i like clouds! ew
ReplyDeleteThat is a very good policy! I love the sculpture, I also love whales. They are such gentle giants.
ReplyDeleteGreat art work.
ReplyDeleteSo recently ended the whale hunt, glad they can pass now safely. Lovely piece of art.
ReplyDeleteIt is a tragedy that there are still a couple of nations involved in whale hunting even though they say it is for scientific research. I'm glad they are safe in your waters, Grace!
ReplyDeleteThe art work is nice! Glad there is protection for the whales. Other countries involved in hunting whales ought to do the same.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant. So glad the whaling station has gone but now the plastic could be an even bigger problem! Have a good week Diane
ReplyDeleteAnti-whaling should be the law everywhere.
ReplyDeleteTimes have changed for sure. Eighteen right whales died along the north eastern Atlantic coast last summer, many caught in traps. This year, before the whales arrived, traps had to be taken out of the water, making a short season for many fishers. It may be too late to save the whales however as the population has been decimated. Sad for the whales and humankind.
ReplyDeleteI think anti-whaling should be the law everywhere...
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
An excellent policy. Thank you for sharing this.
ReplyDeleteThat's a very nice sculpture. A proper sculpture, I might say.
ReplyDeleteAwesome , Thanks for the post.
ReplyDeleteWe humans can be so very destructive. Glad to hear Australia is going in the right direction.
ReplyDeleteLovely shots!
ReplyDeleteGlad the hunting times are over, Grace, but good to always remember they once were and should not come back.
ReplyDeleteUm belo marco para celebrar o fim da caça à baleia.
ReplyDeleteUm abraço e boa semana.
