It really is a miracle that any plant can survive out there on a searing 42C summers day, and this year the weather in Perth has been hotter than ever..one plant that seems not only to enjoy but thrives in these conditions is the
Bougainvillea. At the beginning of summer I
went a little 'loco' and planted
Bambino Bougs in various hanging baskets and pots.. I'm now enjoying much pleasure from those moments of madness as vibrant colour spills out all around my patio. It's the WA State elections on Saturday, I can't remember the last time I was so keen to get into that polling booth and vote! Happy Friday, take care and stay safe.....
Bougainvillea - one of my all time favourite plants (except the thorns!). I loved them in my garden when we lived in warmer climes. Thinking of buying one for my greenhouse this summer as an experiment!

ReplyDeleteThese heat happy plants abound in my area too. They seem to survive in the worst of contitions. However, they don't like cold; not one little bit. We always have at least one freeze every winter the poor bougs crumple up and die. But, have no fear; I just trim off the dried branches and the next thing you know that are back and blooming like crazy.

ReplyDeleteI grew up with these gorgeous plants growing everywhere, how sweet to see them again like this! I wish I were still in a climate amenable to bougainvilleas (though I must say, the northeast here is beginning to feel like the new Caribbean, what with all the hurricanes!) ReplyDeleteHmmm, yes, I think it must have been the darkest winter on this side of the Rhine too. And yes, I think bougainvillées are a good bet for you in those temperatures! They are so beautiful!

ReplyDeleteWell, I'm a little envious and then, maybe not! Bougainvillea is pretty, but it's full of awful stickers. We had a bunch of it on a fence along side of our pool in our old house in Ocala. Trouble was it died every winter and looked awful. Then one year it didn't come back. I had to cut it down and pull it up and make sure none of the stickers got in the pool. Ugly job. So, we decided it's too cold here. If we want to grow the stuff we're going to have to move back to south Florida where it's hot like Perth! :)

ReplyDeleteI love how these are actually NOT flowers, but rather Bracts!! The actual flower, itself, is the small creamy white part inside and often hidden by the Bracts!!!

You have some nice varieties there very colourful. My neighbour has the big ones hanging over the fence. You sure have had a hot summer. I heard a scientist say it has been a year of weather on steroids.

ReplyDeleteI love those - in San Diego our house had a 75 year old plant that covered an arch over the driveway. After we sold the house and moved to Vegas it was the first thing the new owners chopped down. Imagine, that old and big and surviving all the owners of that house, and something that made it lovely and a reason to buy and it goes first. Here in Vegas we can't grow them, not because of the heat but because of the cold, they can't take anything under freezing. (we've tried several times)
ReplyDeleteThey are very popular in southwest Florida. I have some that aren't flowering the way I think they should. I have read that they don't want to be overwatered or fed, so maybe I have been too nice to them.
