Sitting on the corner of Hay and William St. right in the centre of the city is one of Perth's oldest churches. Designed in the Gothic Revival style by Richard Jewell, The Wesley Church opened it's doors to it's first Methodist congregation in 1870. So much has changed in the 142 years since then, apart from the obvious ones like the surrounding skyscrapers, the Wesley Church is also home to Wesley Mission and is now one of three Uniting Churches in the Perth city area, providing very much more than religious instruction. Some things never change though..when it was built way back in the 1860's, at the considerable cost of three thousand pounds, to encourage public donations to help cover this expense the 'Pew Incentive Scheme' was developed... and here's the bit I love, fifty pounds or over got you the best seats in the house, cheaper seats at the back.....haha! Next time I visit the Wesley Church, I'm going in.....!Hope you have a wonderfully relaxing Sunday.....
Gorgeous blue skies are the perfect "heavenly" backdrop for a very beautiful old church! Love reading the history! Money will nearly always get you the best seat in the house -- whatever the house is!! Terrific captures, Grace! I really like the different angles! Enjoy the remainder of your weekend!!

Love Gothic!
ReplyDeleteLove these churches surrounded with the built up 'new world'. It's a reason I Love Boston and Philly.
ReplyDeleteYes, old churches in new cityscapes make for great photos - I like 2nd particularly.
ReplyDeletesomeone cares: this church does not seem so old! I like the contrast with the modern buildings behind..
ReplyDeleteYes, this was quite common in Europe as well, you just got to be seen, they have to know that you're rich. But has this really changed that much???
ReplyDeleteSO lovely... a juxtaposition of new and old!
ReplyDeleteVery pretty, Grace. I like the sun flares in the first two photos.
ReplyDeleteI always thought all people were equal in the eyes of god no matter how much money they have, obviously not :-).
ReplyDeleteWonderful seeing this church within modern architecture.
ReplyDeletePlease have a good Sunday ahead.
looks beautiful!
ReplyDeletehave a wonderful sunday Grace!!
Habituellement, je n'apprécie pas les immeubles modernes près des églises anciennes. Mais ici, je trouve que les deux architectures se marient dans le même mouvement.
ReplyDeleteBon dimanche, Gracie!
I do like the height you have captured in the second photo. That reflection on the skyscraper above the steeple is just perfect. Bravo Grace.
ReplyDeleteVery stunning the contrast between church and ultra-modern skyscrapers!! Arianna
ReplyDeletepretty photos, like the old and the new architecture!
ReplyDeleteAs fotos são lindíssimas... O progresso arquitectura está aí, tudo combina em perfeita harmonia. Eu pessoalmente gosto do equilíbrio entre o antigo e o moderno.

Interesting contrast with the surrounding buildings.
ReplyDeleteI like this. It sort of reminds me of Saint Patrick's in NYC but differently. I love old and new together!
