Up there Cazaly.........!!
What a buzz to have one of your photographs celebrated in statue form (although if one of my photographs was going to be immortalised, I'd prefer it to be of something 'pretty', not men playing with balls haha!), this is exactly what happened when Maurie Hammond, photographer for The West Australian, took this photo, impressive, who said white men can't jump! It was a 'mark' taken by South Fremantle's John Gerovich over East Fremantle's Ray French in October 1956, which Maurie clicked at possibly the most exciting point. The image was commemorated by local sculptor Robert Hitchcock and sits in front of the gates to the Fremantle Football Club. If you've ever watched an 'Aussie rules' game, you will have seen that the rules are very different from soccer in the 'mother' country, some say 'vive la difference' others say....eh!! check out this little video Up there Cazaly made in 2010....

ReplyDeletesuperbe statue, le foot australien est un sport tres physique , j'aime beaucoup, on en voit des fois sur le cable en France
ReplyDeleteThis photo is almost perfect. Just that car to ditch. Just love everything else about it.
ReplyDeleteI can not understand how they dont hurt themselves when they come back down. Beats me. I love the info I learn from you of things I dont know about our amazing city. You are doing such a fabulous job! Fiona
ReplyDeleteIs it called rugby? Very interesting story! These contact sports are really rough!
ReplyDeleteRather cruel to inflict Up There Cazaly onto the unaware.
ReplyDeleteNice photo, Grace, and a most interesting post. I liked the video. Amazing that they get up so high. (Still don't understand a thing about Australian rules football . . . )
ReplyDeleteThat's a great statue!
ReplyDeleteAll looks incomprehensible to this yank!

How the &%#@^ did he do that, climb up the other guy's back? I doubt many of us outside Australia know what a mark is but Gerovich is up higher than Michael Jordan shooting a 3 pointer.
ReplyDeleteTerrific colorful capture and interesting for those of us not from Australia. I always love the things I learn about your country from your wonderful posts, Grace! Hope all is going well!
ReplyDeleteSylvia
Great statue with lovely flowers, Grace!
ReplyDeleteOur little bit of snow is slowly melting...
Always amazes me how footballers can get up so high and take almost impossible marks. Still, that's what make the game. C'mon the Dockers!
ReplyDeletenice statue.. and thanks for sharing the video too. it's fun!
ReplyDelete:-)
ReplyDeleteI've better RUGBY...
Greetings from France,
Pierre
Never noticed the statue, will have to check it next time I´m in Fremantle. Still can´t figure out the game though, but then I´m not sporty at all.
Fascinating post. And I've seen several of your photos that could be "sculpturized" very easily. I dunno much of anything about soccer except that in other places in the world it is very popular...not so much here.
ReplyDeleteHope you're having a great day on the other side of the world!
The sculptor did a fine job creating this piece.
ReplyDeleteHa ha!
ReplyDeleteLovely pic.
I agree, if a photo of mine was to be immortalized I would hope its wasnt men playing with balls .. LMAO ... ;-)
ReplyDeleteHammond's photo is quite impressive, especially when you consider the film camera and lens he must have been using.
ReplyDeletethis monument is very "living"!I'd be proud to have one of my picture statufied!
ReplyDeleteIt's FOOTBALL not soccer!
ReplyDeleteInteresting monument, striking pose!
ReplyDeleteYep, it's Aussie footy all right!
ReplyDeleteI hear the stadium for Australian football is HUGE! I'd love to watch a game!
