What a buzz to have one of your photographs celebrated in statue form (although if one of my photographs was going to be immortalised, I'd prefer it to be of something 'pretty', not men playing with balls haha!), this is exactly what happened when Maurie Hammond, photographer for The West Australian,
took this photo, impressive, who said white men can't jump! It was a 'mark' taken by South Fremantle's John Gerovich over East Fremantle's Ray French in October 1956, which Maurie clicked at possibly the most exciting point. The image was commemorated by local sculptor Robert Hitchcock and sits in front of the gates to the Fremantle Football Club. If you've ever watched an 'Aussie rules' game, you will have seen that
the rules are very different from soccer in the 'mother' country, some say 'vive la difference' others say....eh!! check out this little video

How the &%#@^ did he do that, climb up the other guy's back? I doubt many of us outside Australia know what a mark is but Gerovich is up higher than Michael Jordan shooting a 3 pointer.

Always amazes me how footballers can get up so high and take almost impossible marks. Still, that's what make the game. C'mon the Dockers!

Never noticed the statue, will have to check it next time I´m in Fremantle. Still can´t figure out the game though, but then I´m not sporty at all.

Fascinating post. And I've seen several of your photos that could be "sculpturized" very easily. I dunno much of anything about soccer except that in other places in the world it is very popular...not so much here.
