Magnificent Mammoth!

It's been quite a week.. understatement! As a family we held our collective breath when one of the 'clan' going into hospital for routine surgery had a severe allergic reaction and spent two nerve wracking days in the ICU. Thankfully, as one of the fittest members of the family all is well.. 'note to myself, must get fit' :) then if I mention coughs, colds and flu you might get an idea of what it's been like! To top it off yesterday very early I dragged P down to UWA.. huge book sale, you would have been eager too.. right? Only thing.. it's on next weekend :)

The university has beautiful gardens so I took the opportunity, seeing as we were there anyway :) to walk and take some photos. The Moreton Bay Fig in these shots must be well over one hundred years old.. standing under the massive boughs stretching right over the path, it was a little surreal to think that this mammoth had been here long before I was born and would be here long after I'm gone! I hope your weekend was, or is, a little less stressful, happy new week, take care and stay safe...p.s. big catch up today!

  1. Gorgeous trees. I'm glad all is well now, besides the little aches and pains of winter.

I feel for you... I once did that with a friend. We wanted to go to an auction in Versailles but she misread the date... We missed it by a week! At least you can still go!

  3. Sorry about the health problems. No fun for sure. These trees are magnificent. They remind me a lot of the ficus trees we have in south Florida.

  4. Oh, I do agree with Lowell, health problems of any kind are the pits!! And magnificent trees indeed! They remind me so much of those in the park near me! I've shown pics of them on my blog, too, and they always get a lot of attention!! Do take care, Grace, and have a lovely, care free week!!

  5. What a neat tree, I find a huge one like that every now and then but it is hard to take photos that show how really large they are.

  6. Having had gone through a cold the last few days, I can relate to health issues, but not to the point when I needed medical care.

    That is a giant!

  7. How incredibly gorgeous tree. It has to be very old.
Really nice branch which subtends over the path.

  8. I keep telling myself that: "Must get fit." I'll probably be saying it as I take my last breath!

That's an amazing tree. Here, so many old trees have been cut down for no good reason. It breaks my heart.

  11. Sorry to read about the family stresses, but it is a relief that the clan member fought off the ills.

Great tree! Like Lowell said, we have figs (ficus) in south Florida and they can become huge. The one at the university is quite stately.

  12. Sorry to hear of the stressful times Grace, and hope everything and everyone soon back to normal. I love those trees, they are just soooooo beautiful - what a consolations prize and …. the books will still be there next weekend! Fantastic! Have a wonderful week, Joyxo

  13. Glad to hear that your family crisis turned out well. Don't worry about the tree being so old. I just saw a documentary about a tree that's 3,500 years old and still doing great. Trees can out live us by quite a bit. Now if your fig tree could just tell us stories of the past.

  17. This is a fantastic tree! It looks lovely, in all its massiveness. Here in our area we have the Redwood trees that are huge and hundreds of years old. They're very impressive, but completely different than your beautiful tree.

  18. A very restful weekend, thank you, which is unusual as my mother's health gives us fairly regular scares these days. Glad to here that all is well now. Those trees are magnificent; the angle that those lower boughs are growing at just doesn't look possible.

  19. Thank goodness your relative recovered well Grace. It must have been a worrying time. Moreton Bay Figs fascinate me Grace. They are a sign of strength in age. I call them "Time Travellers". Here are a few words which accompanied my post of a moreton bay fig last year.

It holds on still this mighty fig with twists that grip the earth.
It repels the glare this ancient tree its leaves diffuse the sun.
It invites a gaze, requests a presence, commands a mind unswerving.
And there it is a face, a smile, a rustling laugh is heard in filtered light.
It shelters pasts this mighty tree a time of eyes that sparkle.
A gust of wind, a creaking bow, I nod and then move on.

    All the best J.

  20. That sounds like a hectic weekend for you. Health is very important and when a relative or friend is not well it can frightens you very much. I can imagine you were so confused you picked the wrong date for the book sell. At least you had some nice photo's of the impressive trees.
    All the best, Marianne
